Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 4 slices Swiss or American cheese
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (for grilling)
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix ketchup, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder until well combined. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tbsp of butter. Add chopped onions and sauté for about 8-10 minutes until caramelized.
  3. Shape ground beef into four patties slightly larger than the bread slices. Season with salt and pepper. Cook in another skillet for about 3-4 minutes per side until desired doneness.
  4. Layer each patty with sautéed onions and a slice of cheese while still in the skillet to allow melting.
  5. Butter one side of each slice of rye bread and place butter-side down in a skillet. Stack each patty melt between two slices of bread and grill until golden brown, about 3 minutes per side.
  6. Cut in half to reveal the melty goodness inside and serve hot with fries or salad.
